We’re obsessed with this trick for getting flawless hair waves

Perfect, messy-but-not-TOO-messy hair waves are such a punish to achieve, right? You either wind up with tight barrel curls, or limp, slightly kinked strands. That perfect in-between seems so hard to get right, and while some of us might have some secret magic touch with a curling wand, for the rest of us any hack that can give us undone waves is welcome.
The latest comes from famed hairdresser Anh Co Tran, who is coining his recent hair look ‘wave formation’. According to Refinery29, the look is somewhere between relaxed beachy waves, and classic ‘S’ waves. “With this look, you have versatility in the sense that you get a truly edgy, rock-‘n’-roll look if you deconstruct it,” Tran explained to the US site. “On the other hand, if you keep it [as is] you get a more modern twist on a finger-wave.”
As you can see, the look basically uses a curling tong more in the way you would use a crimping iron. You’re clamping down on sections, but gently, and then alternating by pulling the hair up and against the wand. The shaking side to side? That keeps the wave soft and loose as opposed to super ‘S’ like.
Gals with hair that really holds a curl could do this with no product whatsoever – but if you find your curls drop, try adding a styling heat protective spray to the section before going in with the heat tool, to hold the waves. You could also clamp harder/pull tighter and make the waves more ‘S’ like, allowing them to drop to get the perfect finish in the end.
