Beauty looks for long summer nights in Australia are rarely high glam. We generally prefer low-key, beach-to-bar style over heavy layers of foundation – chalk it up to those soaring temps and rooftop soirees! But nailing that “done, but not DONE” feel can be harder than it seems. Aussie Instagram and YouTube star Taleisha Bonora is the poster girl for laid-back party looks, so we got in touch to get her tricks to mastering perfect summery hair and makeup.
“My go-to party hair is a simple wave, nothing dramatic,” says Taleisha. We’ve touched on hair waves for summer parties before – they’re perfect because they’re almost impossible to mess up. In fact, a little mess and texture usually just makes them even better.
If your party plan is to literally head from beach to bar, take some leave-in conditioner to the beach with you, rinse hair after swimming, then run a little through mid-lengths and ends for a gentle hold that’ll help keep frizz at bay. If you’re prepping at home, use your hair straightener to make bends, not curls – bend hair under and run through the straightener, switching directions as you go.
All hail the bronze smokey eye
“I usually go for a bronze look for parties,” says Taleisha. “I’ll use my Nude by Nature bronze eyeshadow, and then add an eyeliner wing with my Rimmel London liquid liner.” Bronze is the perfect colour op for smokey eyes in summer. It’s technically a neutral, but the hint of metallic makes it party-worthy.
Where black or grey smokey eyes in summer can look heavy or mismatched to your floaty playsuits and off-shoulder tops, a bronze smokey works with practically any outfit, and never feels OTT. Adding the black liner flick means your lashes will still look lush!
Dewy is the way to go
Sometimes we just want to go full coverage with our foundation base – but that doesn’t mean our finished look has to look flat or “un-summery”. “I add a bit of MAC highlighter after I finish my foundation,” explains Taleisha. “It gives me a dewy makeup look”.
Add highlighter to your cheekbones, down the centre of your nose, and under your brows to nail the dewy finish – or, if you’re a bit scared of highlighters, try mixing a liquid one into your foundation for a radiant finish that’s foolproof.
