The best way to use foundation when you have freckles

Anyone with freckles knows the conundrum – you want to even out your skin tone and give yourself a brighter complexion, but foundation makes your freckles look grey and obviously ‘covered up’ – even if you don’t really WANT to cover them.
You field the usual “don’t cover your gorgeous freckles!” comments, but that’s not even what you were setting out to achieve! It’s just the perils of freckles – if you want an all over base, you have to sacrifice your natural, freckly beauty. Right?
Wrong. You CAN enjoy an even skin tone and still let your freckles shine through – it’s all in mastering the right formula, and working wonders with some concealer.
At most, use medium coverage
Light coverage foundation is best with freckles, because they’ll give a bit of blurring and brightening without compromising on your freckly spots. If you want to hide redness or look a bit more “flawless”, a medium coverage foundation should do the trick without ‘greying’ out your freckles – but try and go lighter on the freckly areas just in case. High coverage foundations are best to steer clear of. They’re too pigmented to go over freckles without giving that tell-tale “concealing” finish.
Go lighter on your freckles
If you want to use medium coverage but find it masks your freckles, try using a damp beauty blender to blend freckly areas. This will give a more natural finish and prevent foundation from caking on too heavily. In general though, adding less foundation to freckled areas is best. If you have any pimples or redness there, instead try…
Concealer is your friend
Another great option is forgoing foundation altogether and just using well-placed concealer to give an even-toned finish. Using a creamy concealer on pimples, redness, and under eyes can give you the flawless, natural finish you want without blurring out your freckles. Pat concealer on with your fingers, blend gently with a concealer brush, and then tap on a little finishing powder to set.
