This is what first-time lip fillers are really like

Ah, lip fillers. Before Kylie Jenner made them famous, the pout enhancing treatment was something generally thought to be only for rich Hollywood housewives, and people on that tv show ‘Botched’. They had a pretty bad rap, and although Kylie definitely took the cosmetic enhancement to the extreme at some points, her use of lip fillers to create a fuller, but still relatively natural looking pout brought them into a new era – yes, you CAN get lip fillers and still look “normal”.
You gotta admit, girl has some damn fine lips now that she’s worked out the right size and shape. Source: Getty
We sent a real gal, Hannah, for her first ever lip fillers at Privee Clinic, under Cosmetic Nurse Natalie Abouchar RN (who did Botox on our Editor, Mel – read all about that one here!). Here’s her story.
I was very hesitant about lip fillers for a long time. I wanted fuller lips, but I was always concerned they might look too unnatural and everyone would be able to tell. Also – pain levels! I was SO worried about that. But when I was offered to get them done for this story, I figured what better chance to give lip fillers a go with someone really well known for her natural results like Natalie.
Me, before lip fillers, with my baby pup Baxter!
As soon as I walked into Privee Clinic, I asked Natalie about the pain levels. She explained she was going to put numbing cream on me, and that the product itself had a numbing agent in it, so the pain wasn’t going to be awful. PHEW. I also mentioned that I didn’t want them to look unnatural, and she said that because my lips weren’t tiny to begin with, I should have a really natural result. She also stressed that she never wants her work to look ‘fake’ anyway, so that helped my nerves heaps! She asked me what I wanted to change or enhance, and I said I wanted a more pronounced cupids bow, and also that I felt like my lips ‘disappeared’ on the side, like near the crease. So she said she would work on those sections. I think this was the best thing about the experience, and something I didn’t realise – lip fillers aren’t a one size fits all thing, you can just get sections worked on that you want changed, you don’t have to end up with that ‘trout pout’ look or anything.
“My fillers are hyaluronic acid based, it’s a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin and body,” explained Natalie. She gave me some stress balls to squeeze if I got nervous through the treatment, but honestly through the process I didn’t feel much at all – the numbing cream had worked its magic. I reckon on a scale of 1-10, the pain was about a 2? It felt like a tiny pinch when she inserted the needle, I mean I’ve had more painful experiences from eyebrow waxes! Something that did surprise me though was it wasn’t just one injection, it’s a few little ones across the lips. I always thought it was like, inject on one side and the filler MOVES across the lip, which now seems like a dumb thought to be honest, haha!
Later that night my lips felt a bit tender and a bit tight, but there wasn’t any bruising or anything. Sometimes that can happen, Natalie explained, but it didn’t for me which was great. They did swell up quite a bit which made me a bit nervous! But Natalie said it would take a few days to see the final result, and sure enough, two days later all the swelling had subsided and I was left with a look I really loved.
This is them in the swelling stage. Sooo, not even that bad, right?
Honestly, I didn’t really know WHAT to expect when it came to the final look. But what I ended up with was a bit more fullness, and the best part – my lips have a new, better shape to them. My cupids bow is more defined, exactly what I wanted! People haven’t really noticed, only a handful of people really close to me that I’m around a lot. I’m totally open about it though, and because I love the result I’ve told loads of people, and they’re always like “I wouldn’t have even noticed if you hadn’t said anything!” which is exactly the kind of reaction I wanted – I always wanted the fillers to look natural enough that people who didn’t see me daily wouldn’t even be able to tell.
After a few days when the swelling went down!
I find I have completely embraced lipstick now, more so than ever before, because my lip line is even and pronounced, so they look amazing in colours! They don’t feel weird at all, for the first week or so I kept licking them because I could feel the difference in size, but now I barely notice. They do feel a bit firmer than a natural lip, but you get used to the feeling quite quickly.
Proper selfie to get the full vibe of the lips. Also with Baxter because pet selfies are life. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’m so happy with them – Natalie explained to keep the shape and size, I’d need to re-visit every 6 months or so, and I’ll totally be doing that – they feel like my “normal” lips now so to go back would be so weird! 10/10, would recommend.
